The White House confirmed the initiation of federal worker layoffs on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings in response to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s process for letting employees go.

Although the official provided no details on which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that agency. Additionally, a DHS spokesperson noted that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a union for federal workers announced that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on services used by the public and pledged to contest the moves in the legal system.

This is shameful that the government has exploited the funding lapse as an pretext to illegally fire numerous employees who provide critical services to the public across the country,” stated a national union president, representing the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO responded to the news, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a Republican-backed bill to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until the following week, meaning the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved before then.

At a press conference, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the Republican bill, which passed in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

“This is the last paycheck that 700,000 federal workers will see until opposition leaders decide to do their job and reopen the government,” the speaker said. Beginning shortly, military personnel, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Previously, labor groups filed for a temporary restraining order to prevent the government from implementing any reductions in force during the shutdown. Moreover, a court official directed the administration to disclose details on termination strategies, impacted departments, and if any federal employees had been recalled to carry out layoffs.

A report contended that a funding lapse restricts the ability of the administration to conduct terminations, citing guidance that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been started before the funding expired.

Impact on Workers

The layoffs took place on the very day that government employees received only a partial paycheck for the final days of September but excluding the beginning of the current month, since appropriations lapsed at the beginning of the month.

A public service advocate, the president of the advocacy group, criticized the political stalemate’s impact on federal employees.
