Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People purchasing these medications must be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to original weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.
This challenge is compounded if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
